THE PITFALLS OF ACCEPTING A COUNTEROFFER: WHY IT'S BEST TO MOVE ON

The scenario is you’re all set with job offer from a different company which you’ve signed, and your current company says please reconsider. What’s the best thing to do? Only you can really decide on what course of action to take but this article highlights some of the reasons why at times it’s best to move on.

Using another job offer as leverage to secure a higher salary from your current employer may seem appealing, but it often leads to unfavorable outcomes. Instead, consider negotiating a raise based on your own merits or be prepared to explore new opportunities, as accepting a counteroffer can strain your relationship with your employer and hinder future career growth for several reasons.
Counteroffers are often made in moments of panic, which may change your standing within the company, potentially putting you on the list for future cutbacks. Your company might merely be buying time to find a replacement, leaving you pushed out shortly after accepting their counteroffer.

The reasons for your initial job search, such as personality fit, work dissatisfaction, or lack of recognition, are unlikely to change, leading to recurring discontent. Reflect on why you thought of leaving in the first place.

While accepting a counteroffer may result in an immediate pay increase, it might also impact future salary negotiations, and you may be denied a raise in the future. Of course this is not the case all the time, especially if you’re a consistent performer in the company. Just keep in mind, higher monetary benefits is good, but not the only thing to consider.

Never use job offers as bluffs. Using another job offer as a bluff is risky and could lead to unwanted consequences.

Burning bridges that may be important to you in the future may not be the best way to go. Accepting a counteroffer after going through a hiring process with a potential new employer may harm future opportunities with that company.
